I address my voice to the skies
While I sit here.
I am happy to see you.
A shooting star will be your guide.
Your ancestors guide you.
Your relatives hear you.
The Universe is generous with you my brother.
Today, I created a song and a painting in loving memory of my friend Moses Amik, who entered the waakwi realm to be with his ancestors on this day, 9 years ago. Time flies by quickly, and so does my memory.
When I gaze upwards, I sometimes still see him as a shooting star coloring the sky with the same vivid hues he once applied to his canvases. At night, his iconic grin still seems to part the stars, and when I listen to the wind, I can still hear his laughter and his conversations about animals, trees, and plants. When he spoke about our relatives, I genuinely felt as if Mother Earth was smiling.
The heart, art, teachings, and humor of Moses were, and continue to be, mashkiki/medicine for those fortunate enough to encounter him.
Baamaapii. I will always remember you, niijii.
