"When confusion sets into your life, you have the ability to choose another branch from the tree of life and follow that branch towards discovery. When you stand back and take a good look, you have so many branches to choose from."
—James Mishibinijima (painter))
Aaniin! Let's pause for a moment to reflect.
I think it's truly heart-breaking to witness the damage colonialism has caused to the hearts and minds of Native peoples. You can see it happening all over Turtle Island. Corruption prevails at the top, while lateral violence occurs at the bottom. Imposed governing systems that do not align with traditional values disrupt our old traditional ways of life and thinking. This has resulted in enduring pain, division, and trauma within communities. Instead of challenging poor leadership, individuals at the bottom direct their frustration toward each other, engaging in infighting, gossip, backstabbing, and micro-aggressions. Internal conflicts have become commonplace and ignores the structural rot driving it.
It is disheartening to see people mimicking the behavior of colonizers, both in person and online, even at powwows, ceremonies, and in lodges. At times, it feels like a dead-end situation, but should we abandon hope? Heck, no. It's time to speak up and remind each other of our responsibilities. Recall the traditional values our ancestors fought and died for. Be a cycle breaker. Be a true human being. Lead by example and don't hesitate to hold others accountable for their toxic behavior. Breaking the vicious cycle of trauma begins within ourselves. We always have a choice, the ability to choose another branch from the tree of life.
Miigwech bezindawiyeg; thank you for listening.
